| Admission of New Students |
Every new applicant should follow the steps summarized on this flow chart: Admission Flow Chart
When new students are being considered for admission for ACST, the following procedures will be followed:
Once a completed application file is submitted, the appropriate principal will interview the student and the parents. The finance manager will discuss the fee structure with the parents. Arrangements are made to test student's level of learning so as to determine grade placement. The ESL teachers may be consulted as appropriate. These tests cannot be scheduled until the admission form and accompanying documentation (school records) are completed and the testing fee is paid. A student cannot being classes until payments or acceptable arrangement for payment have been made with the Finance Director.
The student's previous records-grade or school year reports, cumulative records, standardized test results, special evaluations, etc.-are examined to support proper grade placement. ACST recognizes that our students come to us from a number of different backgrounds and in some cases that may have included periods of homeschooling. In our admissions process, we require official school records to assist us in making our placement decisions. It is desirable for students who have been home-schooled to have official documentation of those experiences. This becomes essential with enrollment into high school if we are to accept transfer credits. Admission and grade placement decisions will be conditional until such time as the school records are submitted or forwarded to the school office.
Variation in age and grade placement is to be expected, given the wide variety of school systems and backgrounds of incoming ACST students. The goal is to find the instructional environment that will challenge while not frustrate the student by being too easy or too difficult. Efforts will be made to keep students in a reasonable age-peer cohort.
Arrangements for the registration fee and the tuition are to be made prior to the child's first day of school. The parents and the child will be referred to the business manager to make arrangements for the bus. ACST welcomes all applicants, but parents should note that ACST personnel and facilities are compatible with the entire range of student needs, particularly those of severely learning disabled, physically handicapped, or emotionally disturbed. All new and transfer students will be tested before they can enter school. These tests are used to determine proper instructional placement and to predict the ideal level of successful study for prospective students.
Admission and placement will therefore be determined on an individual basis. ACST is not equipped to handle students with severe special needs. ACST does have academic support programs for mild and moderate learning disabilities, English for second language learners, and remedial reading. The specialty staff will recommendations to the principals regarding any academic support required. The director, in consultation with the principals, makes all decisions regarding acceptance and special support required.
