| Walk for Haiti 2010 |
|
Despite being over 5,000 miles away, the American Cooperative School of Tunis (ACST) felt the pain and devastation caused by the January 12th earthquake near Port-Au-Prince Haiti.
A group of dedicated teachers and students met and decided to raise money to help out in Haiti. One week later, we began our efforts with an after school movie night for students. In addition, we decided to organize a Walk-A-Thon called “Walk Here, to Help There”; our goal was to raise $10,000 for Haiti.
Students and teachers set a bout organizing the event by making posters, creating sponsor forms, and speaking to peers about finding sponsors. One teacher took on organizing the adult volunteers and a National Honor Society student took on the role of organizing student volunteer. In all, over 70 adults and students participated as volunteers on the March 13 Walk-A-Thon. These volunteers counted laps, served drinks to walkers, helped with lunch and managed late registrations.
The Walk-A-Thon along with smaller events raised $13, 241 for Haiti. On March 22, 2010, the entire amount was wired to Partners in Health, an organization that works to strengthen the public health infrastructure in Haiti. This event was the result of a dedicated group and a generous community.
