In High School, personal expression, visual communication and visual problem solving skills are strengthened. Emphasis is placed on the critical evaluation of one's work and the work of others. Connections to other subject areas are encouraged, as students at the advanced level create a body of work based on a particular theme or subject.
Art I
This foundation course exposes students to fundamental concepts in two-dimensional art with an emphasis on the elements and principles of design. Drawing, painting and design skills are introduced in classroom exercises to be applied in major studio projects. Students are also exposed to examples of past and present artwork and are expected to complete written and oral assignments related to art history.
Art II
(This course is strongly recommended for those students interested in the IB Visual Art Program.) Art II is intended for the serious art student who is interested in developing personal meaning and expression in their artwork and in strengthening their technical skills. Each quarter offers a concentrated area of study in drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture. The course also introduces the study of art history and the use of sketchbooks as a research tool. Students are expected to conduct independent research on artists and art periods and write critically about various artworks in order to prepare them for the IB Visual Arts program.
IB Visual Art (SL and HL)
The IB Visual Art course is an intensive, exploratory course that covers content in art history, art criticism, and philosophy of art, as well as studio art techniques. It is intended for the serious art student who may pursue art as a career. Projects are self-directed and require artistic skill, discipline, research and motivation. Students are expected to create a large body of studio work that is presented at the end of the course in a final exhibition.
