IB German B Year 1& 2 (HL)
To fulfill the requirements for the IB Diploma, all students must study a second language, which is usually part of group two. At ACST the study of German as a Language 2 option is offered in group 6. The language B course is a language learning course for students with some previous knowledge of the German language. The main focus is on language acquisition and the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills up to a fairly sophisticated degree at the higher level. The three distinct but interrelated areas are language, cultural interaction and message. Although the nature of the language B course is the same for both higher level and standard level, the two levels differ in the number of types of texts and, more generally, in the depth and breadth of the language used. A successful German B student should not only learn and assimilate basic language structures but should also be able to use the language in a range of situations and purposes for which and in which the language is used.
In Year Two of the German B course, students will continue development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills up to a fairly sophisticated degree at the higher level. The types of texts will enlarge. The written and spoken material, that is challenging both linguistically and in its content, will be more complex than in Year One. The students are taught how to assess subtleties of the language in a wide range of forms, styles and registers and how to communicate effectively in a number of situations and within the German culture.
IB German A1 Year 1 and 2 (SL/HL)
To fulfill the requirements for the IB Diploma, all students must study a Language A1. The German students at ACST mostly take English A1 in group 1. Part IV, School’s Free Choice, includes two (three for HL) language A1 works and one World Literature work studied as a group. At the end of the school year students will study one work (two for HL) from Part II, Detailed Study.
In Year Two of the German A1 course, students will study Parts II and III of the program. In Part II, Detailed Study, students will study poems from three different authors of the 20th century. In Part III, Groups of Work, students will study two (three for HL) Language A1 works and one World Literature Work. These works will be novels.
