In High School music classes, students continue to develop their performance skills with a greater emphasis on personal engagement and choice. Application of theory through compositional tasks is introduced. Students are encouraged to become more musically self-aware in order to develop their reflective and evaluative skills, both of their own work and the work of others.
Music I
This is an introductory course to music at the high school level introducing, reinforcing and furthering students’ knowledge of musical concepts and theory. Students become familiar with the basic skills and technique of performance using the instrumental resources of the music classroom (primarily percussion equipment). Music reading skills are developed throughout the semester using playing exercises and worksheets. Emphasis is placed on participation, both in and out of the classroom.
Music II
Music II emphasizes application to further develop students’ knowledge of musical concepts. In addition to performance, composition and theory are stressed, to better prepare students for the IB Music program. Students strengthen their performance skills with group and solo work and have the opportunity to compose using notation software. Active listening, creativity and analysis skills are critical components of this course. Public group, ensemble and solo performances may be required.
Musical Theatre
Pre-requisite: Music I
This course takes students through the process of developing, rehearsing and producing a work of musical theatre at the end of the semester. All aspects of a musical theatre production are explored, including directing, acting, singing, dancing, scriptwriting, scenery building, costume design, lighting and stage management. Emphasis is placed on participation, both in and out of the classroom. A student who is successful in Musical Theatre has an understanding for the practical application of music skills. In this class, they learn about music within a specific social context and appreciate its emotional appeal under the encompassing umbrella of theatre. Students learn the importance of group dynamics and the value of the individual within the group. They understand the value of live performance because of the dynamic between audience and performer.
IB Music (SL and HL)
This course allows students to explore their creativity through performance and composition, and develop their knowledge and understanding of music styles, genres and terminology. They are exposed to a variety of listening selections from around the world and throughout time. In analyzing these pieces, students learn to express themselves in an intelligent and thoroughly reflective manner. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to develop their individual and collaborative potential as musicians. The IB Music course culminates in an in-depth listening examination and either a solo/group recital or a significant body of work in the field of composition.
