The emphasis in Middle School is on performance-based classes that build technical skills and understanding of the elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, form, texture and expression) along with a student’s self-confidence. Middle School students study music from a wide variety of genres, cultures and historical periods through singing, playing instruments, and listening to pieces by famous composers and performers.

Grade 6
Music 6 is designed to introduce students to the world of musical sound.  Students learn about the different categories of musical instruments and the properties by which they produce sound.  Students become familiar with the basic skills and technique of sound production on a recorder, focusing on the fundamentals of individual instrument technique and ensemble playing. Music reading skills are developed through exercises, worksheets, and a variety of repertoire. Theory work is primarily completed on the computer.  Emphasis is placed on participation, both in and out of the classroom.  Group performances are a required part of this course, both in and out of the classroom.

Grade 7
Music 7 is designed to introduce the fundamentals of individual wind instrument technique and ensemble playing.  Students become familiar with the basic skills and technique of tone production on a specific concert band instrument (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet or trombone).  Music reading skills are developed through exercises, worksheets, and a variety of band repertoire. Theory work is primarily completed on the computer.   Emphasis is placed on participation, both in and out of the classroom. Group performances are a required part of this course, both in and out of the classroom.

Grade 8
In Music 8, students become familiar with the basic skills and technique of sound production on an acoustic guitar. There is an expectation that Grade 8 students have a working knowledge of music notation and are reviewing previously learned concepts.  Music reading skills are further developed through exercises, worksheets, and a variety of repertoire. Theory work is primarily completed on the computer. Emphasis is placed on participation, both in and out of the classroom.  Group performances are a required part of this course, both in and out of the classroom.
