Welcome to ACST School Counseling.   basu

This is my fourth year at the American Cooperative School of Tunis and I am excited to help guide your student’s personal, social and academic growth. This year I will be working with students in all grades from PK to 12.  My goal is to collaborate with students and to help them develop to their full potential. I will be engaging with students, parents, and teachers in a range of ways throughout the year. Below are some of the things you could expect to see this year.

Elementary Classroom Guidance Lessons: I will be teaching counseling based lessons in elementary classrooms this school year.  The themes will be focused around our ACST core values and learner qualities. These themes will be age appropriate and will be student centered. For example, students will understand and learn how to express their feelings; how to accept their friends’ differences and similarities, and how to develop self-esteem and learn team-work skills. Ideas related to these lessons will be shared with parents via email, the Falcon Flyer, or classroom newsletters.Secondary School Grade Level Lessons: I will be working with grades 6 to 12 throughout the year during student Advisory sessions. During these sessions, I will encourage students to extend themselves, in social, personal and educational spheres and to spark their curiosity regarding a variety of life adventures. Students will also participate in activities that increase their positive self-esteem and enhance their effective communication skills.

Individual and Group Counseling: Sometimes students need help coping with life events; sometimes they struggle through challenging moments, and sometimes they may lack academic and/or emotional grit.  My door is open, all through the school day, for any student who needs brief and immediate counseling. Group interactions focused on specific issues, needs or interests, are scheduled throughout the school year. These allow for a more extended engagement. Groups are also a great method for students to make personal connections while building and showing compassion toward each other as they mature into young adults.
Individualized Academic and Career Advising: I advise students through their secondary school career by helping them select classes that are appropriate for their future post-secondary educational plans. I accomplish this by meeting with students individually as well as speaking with them in their classrooms.
Parent Collaboration: Active and responsible parent involvement is vital to students’ achieving educational maturity and strength. I work closely with parents, teachers and students to find innovative ways to foster positive learner growth. Whether concerns are personal, academic or behavioral, I am available to help resolve the issue and/or make referrals to community services when necessary.

Parent/Student Information Sessions: Throughout the school year I present sessions that focus on a variety of topics pertaining to each grade level. Sessions may focus on a range of topics such as: school life; parenting children, pre-teens and adolescents; how high school academic choices affect university selection, and future careers and university admissions processes.

Transitions: Many of our students move often.  Adjusting to new environments, including schools, presents challenges to our learners. I assist students in becoming comfortable at ACST and I also help students cope with moving on to their next home and school. I also help students who are missing friends and teachers who have moved on. Change is a part of life and I strive to help students understand and develop coping skills for life changes, whatever they may be.

I look forward to an energetic, fun and successful school year.
